Historical and Touristic Notes
Buonconvento (from the Latin name Bonus Conventus) in its spirit of happy community, is a small village built on the ancient route of the Via Francigena. Located and grown thanks to the fertility of the rivers Arbia and Ombrone, it is still a place of hospitality, as it was in the past for pilgrims and travelers to Rome.

It is remembered in the history books since 1191 with the passage of the King of France Philip Augustus and, later, for the inauspicious stop of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Arrigo VII of Luxembourg who, alas, here found death in August 1313. It was village remembered also from the Boccaccio in the fourth novella of the ninth day of the Decameron for the misfortune happened to the senese poet Cecco Angiolieri.

You can still breathe a timeless atmosphere, a way of life, a rhythm marked by the tolling of the clock of the medieval tower of the Palazzo del Podestà among the alleys and “chiassi” that articulate suggestive, in the historic village.

Illustrious men of letters of all times have passed through this land and in their travel notes have remembered this delightful glimpse of Tuscany. We would like to remember, among the many, the verses of the great poet Luzi: “Past Siena, past the bridge of Arbia, is she, land of light that always, even far away, inseparably accompanies me …”

The tourist will be able to immerse himself in a still uncontaminated landscape, characterized by valleys and hills, adorned by rows of cypresses, variously cultivated with vines or sprinkled with the leaves of silver olive trees, so much so that it looks like a Macchiaioli painting. The small woods are ablaze with colors in autumn.

The countryside is still dotted with well-preserved farms, with their characteristic red bricks, or with stone facades, with porticoes and loggias, jewels of rural architecture. This is also how the painters of the Sienese School perceived it centuries ago: in their formal purity close to abstraction, they repeatedly quoted it, depicting it in ashen, desert-like reliefs, sometimes barely streaked.

Among the main monuments we remember: The Pieve di Santa Innocenza a Piana, the Musei Comunali di Arte Sacra della Val d’Arbia e della Mezzadria Senese, the Art Nouveau palaces among which stands out villa La Rondinella, the church SS. Pietro e Paolo.

In the surroundings of the village there are four castles of private property that in particular occasions are opened for visits to the public: Castelrosi, Castelnuovo Tancredi, Bibbiano and La Torre a Bibbiano.

Means of transport
Buonconvento has a train station with a Siena Grosseto line and is connected with a bus line along the Cassia with connections also to Abbadia San Salvatore, Radicofani and Acquapendente. and Acquapendente
